Starting Salary: $90,000- $105,000 (depending on experience)

Job Summary:
The Transportation Division Safety Manager is responsible for developing and leading safety initiatives and strategies designed to maintain compliance with DOT requirements and continuously improve transportation safety performance. This position will monitor changes to DOT and FMCSA regulations and develop or update driver safety policies, procedures, and training accordingly. While this position does not directly manage drivers, it will work closely with the Transportation Operations Manager, Driver Managers, Fleet Manager, and Corporate Transportation Manager to promote consistent safety expectations and practices across the Transportation Division. 

 

Duties & Responsibilities:  

• Develop, implement, and execute a comprehensive transportation safety program
• Travel to all Woodgrain locations in which drivers are based on conduct safety training sessions
• Identify, develop, educate, coach, report, and monitor fleet safety performance
• Lead any accident investigations and cooperate with all needed law enforcement
• Collaborates with risk management team to file accident claims with insurance in regards to traffic accidents and driver related workers compensation claims
• Maintain all accident files and documents
• Maintain and analyze the DOT and non-DOT accident log in order to create new policies and or provide focus for Woodgrain safety efforts
• Monitor and reduce overall driver and company CSA scores
• Research and propose new safety technology
• Collaborate with the Corporate Transportation Manager, Fleet Manager, and Transportation
• Operations Manager to assist in fleet policy create and enforcement
• Keep Woodgrain up to date with all DOT and FMCSA mandated regulations

 

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Transportation, Business Administration, Risk Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation, fleet safety, DOT compliance, or a related safety-focused role
• Previous experience with commercial motor carrier operations and applicable DOT/FMCSA regulations required
• Current CDL Class A required, with the ability to conduct or assist with driver road tests.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid DOT medical card and successfully complete required physical abilities testing
• Demonstrated experience investigating vehicle accidents, identifying root causes, and developing corrective actions
• Working knowledge of DOT/FMCSA compliance requirements, driver qualification standards, hours-of-service regulations, drug and alcohol testing requirements, and applicable transportation safety regulations
• Experience monitoring safety performance metrics, including CSA scores, accident trends, and other fleet safety indicators
• Ability to develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, procedures, training, and programs
• Must be willing and able to travel to Woodgrain locations and driver terminals as needed.
• Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets company and insurance requirements.

• Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify trends and translate data into actionable safety improvements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Additional languages preferred.

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands and work environment for this role align with those of a standard office setting and truck yard. While performing job duties, the employee may occasionally need to stand, walk, sit, use hands for handling objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, as well as talk and hear. This role may occasionally require lifting or moving up to 25 pounds. This role will require driving and operating a motorized vehicle on a frequent basis. The specific vision abilities required by the job include close vison, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The position may require occasional long hours and weekend work based on project deadlines. May perform minor tractor/trailer maintenance, including changing lights, airlines, wiper blades, and mud flaps. 

 

Travel:

This position may require travel to other Woodgrain locations, expected travel time is < 30%.
